Everybody needs them. Everybody has heard of them. Electrolytes!

But what do they do exactly? Why are they so important? Where do you get them from? And when do you need to pay particular attention to them? Let me fill you in with this little electrolyte 101.

What are Electrolytes?

As their name already implies, electrolytes are substances which conduct electricity when dissolved in the body’s fluids. Major minerals include magnesium, calcium, and potassium.

They have many important functions – from regulating your heartbeat to controlling muscles and nerves, to keep you moving. Whenever there is an imbalance of electrolytes moving through the fluids inside, outside, and between cells, muscles and nerves send out warning signals. They remind your body to stock up on important substances.

Step 1. Adjust Your Diet

In some cases, electrolyte deficiency is caused by poor diets that are high in sodium but low in other minerals like magnesium or calcium. Make simple dietary changes to correct the imbalance. Cut back on junk food and take-outs. Instead, invest time in cooking fresh, healthy meals at home, including vegetables and fruits. Or why not add a banana, one of the richest sources of magnesium and potassium, to your FitLine routine to start your day.

Step 2. Drink Enough Water

Drinking enough water helps to prevent levels of sodium and potassium from either rising too high or sinking too low. But don’t overdo it. Drinking too much water may dilute the cells, which is just as bad as dehydration. The amount of water you should drink on a daily basis depends on how often you exercise, which climate you live in, and your individual diet. So, be sure to find a balance that is right for you.

Step 3. Complement Your Workouts

Everyone who likes to go to their limits and enjoys a drenching workout – Listen up now!
